Biography

Hi! My name is Sarah Kōdō Umezono.
I am a Shakuhachi and flute performing artist and teacher.
I currently study Honkyoku, Sankyoku and modern music under the guidance of David Yūdo Sawyer, under the Mujuan lineage. I received my Jun Shihan menjo in April 2025 and was awarded 2nd place in the 2025 World Shakuhachi Festival Performer’s competition.
I hold a flute performance(BM) degree from the University of Denver. I have been passionately teaching flute and piano lessons for over 10 years and now look forward to teaching Shakuhachi while incorporating my western musical background.
You can find me enjoying hiking, enjoying time in my garden and hanging out with my dogs, Bubbles and Enso in my spare time!
